What is rag rugging?

Rag rugging is an old British craft where people use hessian sacking and old clothing and fabric to make cosy rugs for the floor. It was incredibly widespread during Victorian times when lower income families embraced rag rugging as a way to make the most out of everything they had. They took the clothing that was no longer fit for purpose and worked their magic to make wonderful rugs for the cold, stone floors.

Rag rugging involves a lot of cutting of fabric, which is why it's important to have the best tools for the job. Our Ragged Life Deluxe Kit includes our super sharp Rag Rug Fabric Scissors, which make cutting fabric strips for rag rugging easier than ever before. Our rag rug scissors are specifically designed to work with a whole spectrum of different fabrics - from jersey, cotton and Lycra, right up to blanket yarn, fleece and denim. They are also made to cut through lots of layers of fabric at the same time to reduce fabric prep time and strain.

Please note, the amount of hessian covered with rag rugging depends on the technique used, so one ball of blanket yarn will go further when doing the loopy rag rug technique than the shaggy technique.
