Bringing fun and Crafts to Hochanda

Hi, I’m Derek and I’ve been floating around on your TV screens since around 2004 and, in that time have presented or demonstrated pretty much everything from world cruises to cut diamonds, dog leads to washing machines. I fell into telly sideways from radio and TV shopping is my heart’s desire – I love every aspect of it and it’s all I ever wanted and want to do. I came to Hochanda after a few of years of “getting stuck in” TV, learning from inspiring guests and experts, and I’ve surprised myself and now know my way around techniques for working with jewellery, fabric and now 1001 different crafts through being with the channel. I find myself becoming seriously enthused by what is front of me – and, have seen the genuine well being pluses of working, creating and breaking your own boundaries. I take this and have a little dabble in my cave at home in North Yorkshire that I share with a long-suffering partner and two Tonkinese beauties (cats) Bobble and Pickle. To say that Hochanda is a family would be an understatement. Everyone in the team is there because they have a passion and love the ethos of the channel – I get flutters of excitement every time I arrive to a new day.

Give me a good old roast dinner, but never put gravy on my chips!!

Tea (good old Yorkshire tea) in the biggest mug in the house

You really have to force me to commit to a film, but I did rather enjoy The Favourite whilst away in a holiday cottage in Cornwall one Christmas

Probably Brenda Blethyn or Olivia Coleman (it’s all the eyes)

oh, again - I’m a visual person so books don’t excite me, I did read a Stuart Maconie book recently which made me laugh

I love cats – they are the sweetest and I find it funny how they end up ruling the roost ha ha

When did you first discover your love for arts and craft?

I think it’s always been in my life to be fair. I was always making stuff as a kid, influenced by both my parents (and being an only child)

Have any of your family and friends been inspired to take up any arts and crafts based on your career?

Well, I do know a few people who have seen me ‘following along’ with a guest on screen over the years and it has given them the courage to have a go.

When you’re crafting do you have a favourite snack?

Oh, now it has to be liquorice torpedoes. They are big enough to not go mad and satisfy the crunch desire and liquorice gives a nice chew at the end haha!

What’s your favourite hot beverage (eg type coffee, tea, hot chocolate)?

I’m into Mocha’s at the moment, but have no idea how to make a good one. So I’ll stick with my Yorkshire Tea.

While you’re crafting do you like to have music on, if so what type and do you find it helps your creativity?

I prefer to listen to speech to be fair. I’d be just as happy with The Archers on – I find music that is too slow or too fast can play havoc when I’m concentrating (am I the only one?)

Do you have favourite place to craft in the home (eg, a dedicated craft room, in the kitchen, living room etc)

I have my own “office” (no work happens here) at the top of the house and it has an old school desk and lights where I “have a go”, usually straight after an inspirational stint at Hochanda

What’s your top crafting tip?

Be as brave as you like – and then break another rule. I was always a “colour within the lines” person before Hochanda. Now, anything goes.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

I was once a nightclub bouncer (and when I say once, I mean one night). My friend started a short-lived night club in London and that was my job that night. I had protection though – two wooden nutcracker soldiers stood guard with me!
