Paula Pascual Hochanda Presenter

Crafting and Inspiring others at Hochanda

Hola! I am Paula. I was born in mainland Spain and grew up in the beautiful island of Mallorca. Then in 2002 I moved to South East England, where I lived till late 2017 when I moved to Oundle to be nearer to Hochanda.

Growing up in the household of a professional artist meant that I have been exposed to art, colour and mediums ever since I was born. My favourite book when I was a toddler was one that features masterpieces by an Italian medieval painter! My Mum is a keen sewer and my Aunt was a very accomplished professional dressmaker. Many more in my family are professional artists including musicians so creativity was always in our house. I couldn’t draw (still can’t with a pen!) but loved embroidery and candle making. Then when I was 14 or 15 years old my Grandma suggested I make card with embroidery. And that was it! I never stopped!

When I moved to the UK I started working at a craft shop teaching, demonstrating and helping crafters find what they wanted or needed. I then worked with a few craft manufacturers and companies over the years, mostly in die cutting and stamping, being fortunate enough to use my skills as a graphic designer for die and stamp design, but also being part of their demonstration teams which was how I first arrived to Hochanda in 2017. In 2004 I got my first book deal and recently published my fifth one (snowflake) in 2018.

Although I never even dreamt of being a presenter, in 2019 I officially joined the Hochanda family and I love it! I not only love crafting, but I love the whole team both in front and behind the cameras.

Now as a hobby, I am all about the fabric! I have learned so much from the fabulous guests and presenters, especially Hayley West.I know can’t stop sewing in my free time.

When did you first discover your love for arts and craft?

I think I discovered the joy of crafting when I was eight or nine when my parents gave me a candle making kit. Not that I would recommend it as it’s not safe for kids.

Have any of your family and friends been inspired to take up any arts and crafts based on your career?

Yes, my mum! She was never into paper crafting until I got her a die cutting machine, dies and papers. Now she loves it and makes and send cards for everyone in the family.

When you’re crafting do you have a favourite snack?

Chocolate always. Which isn’t a good idea since it stains. But I can’t keep away!

What’s your favourite hot beverage (eg type coffee, tea, hot chocolate)?

Capuccino in the morning, and then tea!

While you’re crafting do you like to have music on, if so what type and do you find it helps your creativity?

I have to admit, I have Hochanda in the background 80% of the time. It’s truly my family so I always feel happy in their company.

Do you have favourite place to craft in the home (eg, a dedicated craft room, in the kitchen, living room etc)

I am very fortunate that I have a great space for my papercrafting. My sewing though is done in my living room! Joys of living alone mean I can make as much of a mess as I want!

What’s your top crafting tip?

Just do what you enjoy doing and enjoy the process.

What is your funniest on-screen moment?

How long have you got? I have ordered Strippers (I meant chicken strips), I have accused Yiannis of being under my skirt (he was by my skirt), and I have called my cat Wasabi something I shouldn’t have!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

English is my third language, after Spanish which is my mother tongue. I also speak Catalan which I learned in Mallorca.
